CUBA: PAINTING AT TALLER MANERO
2009This collection of paintings and drawings was produced through the collaborative efforts of several groups of children as part of a project initiated by the International School of Havana (ISH). Havanan children from ISH, the Juan Manuel Marquez pediatric hospital, the economically deprived area known as El Fanguito and the Taller de Manero art workshop pondered the theme of Cuban culture.
Working with watercolors, crayons and pencils on white cardboard, the young artists relied solely on their imaginative powers, without the support of visual aides, to communicate a deeply ingrained sense of patriotic pride.
The Cuban flag is a recurring motif amongst the scenes of sun, sea, smiling faces, lush mountainous landscapes, and wildlife.
